The Grounds
On completion of a new building, the entire grounds of the “Topography of Terror“ will be reopened to the public. Among the material traces of the historical site uncovered during the excavations of 1986 and 1996/97 are the remains of the historical buildings along the former Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse (now Niederkirchnerstrasse) and Wilhelmstrasse, the remains of the basement of a former kitchen and canteen building used by the SS as well as the remains of an air-raid protection ditch and of two historical buildings: the cell floors of the former Gestapo prison and the Berlin Wall. Also part of the grounds is a grove of locust trees between Wilhelmstrasse and Anhalter Strasse. According to construction plans of the Nazi period, the buildings already standing both here and on the northeastern section of the grounds were to be replaced by two large buildings to house the Reich Security Main Office. Today, the grove with its vehicle tracks of a former so-called „Autodrom“ (driving without a driver’s license) mainly gives an impression of how the grounds were used in the post-war period. >>Site plan For more informationen about the remaining section of the Berlin Wall go here. |
